Over the past 6 months, we've been investigating a pattern that appears consistently across development sector leadership: the challenge of navigating competing institutional logics without psychological depreciation or mission drift.

We're calling this phenomenon the "institutional stack" - the layered systems of accountability, funding mechanisms, and stakeholder expectations that define organizational reality for hybrid organizations.

Our research examines how exceptional leaders maintain decision sovereignty within these constraints.
