Why do our best leaders burn out?

Leadership development programs produce sophisticated, values-driven leaders. Yet within months of deployment, many experience psychological erosion. They describe impossible choices: compromise principles to access capital, or maintain integrity and watch their organizations stall.

This white paper reveals the structural cause: leaders operate on social welfare logic while environments run on competing market and patronage logics. Current programs provide direction (the compass) but not protection (the shield).

The Sovereignty Protocol addresses this gap. Drawing on institutional logics theory, moral injury research, and field ethnography across African social enterprises, this framework builds the missing infrastructure: institutional bilingualism that enables navigation without identity fragmentation.
